Ghana said no.
President John Dramani Mahama says his government rejected a proposed U.S. bilateral health compact after reviewing terms involving Ghana’s pathogen profile, medical records, required domestic health spending, and restrictions on Ghana’s ability to inspect medical products entering the country.
“Who takes another country’s medical records?” Mahama asked, calling the terms “humiliating” and saying the compact was thrown out by his cabinet in record time.
“We didn’t need it. We’ll manage ourselves.”
The discussion expands into a larger question of African sovereignty, data control, and whether countries on the continent are becoming less willing to accept U.S. terms they view as intrusive or unequal.
