3 Minutes of THIS Is Better Than 90 Minutes of Exercise

3 Minutes of THIS Is Better Than 90 Minutes of Exercise
Can 3 minutes of intense exercise really be better than 90 minutes of traditional exercise?

A fascinating new study compared six 30-second all-out cycling sprints—3 minutes of actual sprinting—with 90 minutes of moderate-intensity cycling. The molecular responses were dramatically different.

But there’s an important catch.

This study does not prove that three minutes of sprinting is universally “better” than 90 minutes of exercise. It measured acute changes in proteins, metabolites, and interorgan signaling—not heart attacks, longevity, weight loss, or long-term health outcomes.

And the workout wasn’t actually only three minutes. Those six sprints included recovery periods, plus warm-up and cool-down.

So why am I so excited about this research?

Because it reinforces something much bigger:

Exercise isn’t simply about burning calories. Exercise is information.

Your contracting muscles can release and influence molecular signals—sometimes called exerkines—that communicate with fat tissue, the liver, blood vessels, and potentially other organs. And exercise intensity may dramatically change that conversation.

In this video, I explain:

What the 3-minutes-vs-90-minutes study actually found
Why the headline needs an important scientific disclaimer
How hundreds of circulating proteins changed after sprinting
What exerkines are
How exercising muscle communicates with fat tissue
Why exercise intensity may provide greater return on your time
Why walking and moderate exercise are still incredibly valuable
Why sprinting isn’t appropriate for everyone
How older adults can think about intensity relative to their own capacity
Why the best exercise is ultimately one you can safely and consistently perform

This is exactly how I think about the Exercise component of my NEST framework.

You don’t need an exercise religion.

You need movement that works for your body, your health, and your life.
