Can’t Spread Your Toes? 3 Corrective Movements for Foot Health

Can’t spread your toes? If you have difficulty actively spreading or splaying your toes, it usually points to a loss of mobility and strength in the intrinsic muscles of the foot.

In this video, we break down the biomechanics of foot health and why toe mobility is critical for pain-free movement. Years of wearing narrow footwear can disrupt the neural connection to your feet, diminishing your base of support. When your toes can’t splay, you lose optimal shock absorption, which can cause a chain reaction of pain up through your ankles, knees, and hips.

Here are 3 beginner-friendly corrective movement exercises to restore your toe splay and strengthen your foundation:

Toe Lifts: Keep your big toe pressed firmly into the floor and lift your four smaller toes.

Big Toe Lifts: Reverse it. Press the four smaller toes down and lift just the big toe.

Active Splay: With your foot flat, actively try to fan your toes out as wide as possible, holding for 5 seconds.

Building strength starts from the ground up. Try these mobility drills daily to help you move better, feel better, and live stronger!
